Qureshi's study carefully describes and documents the performance and rules of Qawwali music in the traditional Sufi assembly.Text priority The music must above all serve the clarification of the text, both acoustically, by making it clearly audible, and structurally, by placing emphasis on the salient formal features of the poem. Qawwals themselves usually refer to their singing as speaking (bolnd), and their major concern is to make the words understood (bol samjhdnd), ... of Qawwali melody, whether in a literal 2: 1 proportion (one long = two short), or in various asymmetrical arrangements (one long agt; short).
